2019 CR-V vs. 2019 CX-5

If you’re in the market for a well-rounded SUV, it’s easy to see why both the Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX-5 are such popular models. They each come with some of the class’ best attributes, from modern technology to engaging performance. When it’s time to decide which vehicle you’re taking home, the choice can seem tough, so let’s compare the two class leaders to pick a winner.

Interior Space and Comfort

SUVs are made for traveling with a full cabin of friends and family. These two vehicles are well-suited to excursions with passengers, and each one presents a handsome interior for the journey. They can also be customized with a wide variety of available features, from heated seating to leather upholstery. While long rides can start to wear on passengers, you’ll find that the CR-V’s comfort doesn’t fade even if the trip goes on for hours. Both rows offer ample legroom and overhead clearance, and the Honda pulls ahead of its rival with particularly spacious rear seats. The CR-V offers a generous amount of cabin space to accommodate taller passengers, and the well-cushioned seating provides plenty of support for comfortable riding posture.

Cargo Capacity

The CR-V’s lead on interior space continues to the cargo area, with a greater storage capacity than the CX-5. Behind the Honda’s rear seats, you’ll find more than 39 cubic feet for cargo, surpassing the Mazda’s 30.9 cubic feet. You can also fold the rear seats for more room in both SUVs, and again, the Honda wins out. With its back row folded, the CR-V presents a total of 75.8 cubic feet for storage, while the CX-5 offers 59.6 cubic feet.

Both the CR-V and the CX-5 complement stellar performance with excellent gas mileage, and they top the compact SUV class with their renowned efficiency. Between the two, however, the CR-V takes the lead with remarkably conservative fuel consumption both in town and on the highway. The CR-V’s base powertrain is able to earn a few more miles to the gallon than the standard CX-5 can glean. That difference continues if you opt for the SUV’s available engines as well.

While both manufactures are respected for their dedication to quality, it’s hard to deny the longevity that Honda has built a reputation on. The CR-V is part of a long legacy of hearty vehicles that have stood the test of time, and you can count on it to perform safely and consistently for miles ahead. Honda backs up their commitment with a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
